Senator Tom Johnson – 48th District

Senator Tom Johnson was appointed to serve the 48th district in the Illinois Senate in December of 2010.  Johnson serves as Minority Spokesman for the Senate State Government & Veterans Affairs Committee and as a member of the Judiciary Committee, Criminal Law Committee, Labor Committee, and Gaming Committee.
 
Johnson served in the Illinois House of Representatives for ten years, from 1993 to 2003.  While in the house, he served as Chairman of the Judiciary committee and also as Co-Chairman of the Illinois Prison Reform committee.  He also sat on the Environment and Energy, Labor and Commerce, Education, Education Appropriations, Public Safety Appropriations, Health and Human Services, and Veterans’ Affairs Committees.
 
Since 2004 Johnson has served on the Illinois Prisoner Review Board.
 
Johnson is a retired lawyer.  He began his career with the DuPage County States Attorney’s office first as an investigator and eventually as Chief of the White Collar Crime Division.  In private practice Johnson specialized in small business and real estate law.  He retired from his firm Johnson, Westra, Broecker, Whittaker & Newitt P.C. in 2004.
 
In addition to his law practice and time spent in the Illinois House, Johnson was also a small business owner.  He is the original owner and developer of Butterfield Hardware Store in Wheaton, IL.
 
Johnson received his law degree from DePaul University in 1974 and was admitted to the bar the same year.  His bachelor’s degree is in general studies from the University of Michigan.  Johnson served in the United State’s Army and fought in the Vietnam War.  He was honorably discharged in 1968.
 
Johnson has been active in many local civic organizations and lives in West Chicago with his wife, Virginia. They have three grown children.
